Hollywood Reporter – Gibson is back behind the camera where he says he prefers to be.
After a ten-year hiatus, Mel Gibson is back in the director’s chair. His latest epic Hacksaw Ridge explores the true-life war drama of Desmond Doss, the first conscientious objector to receive the American Medal of Honor.

Andrew Garfield plays a Seventh-Day Adventist who feels it is his duty to serve during WWII, but at the same time can’t disobey his religious convictions against picking up arms. He overcomes the army’s ridicule and scorn to serve as a medic at Hacksaw Ridge during the Battle of Okinawa.

In untold bravery, he single-handedly rescued over 75 of his comrades’ lives while under constant enemy fire. Vince Vaughn co-stars as Sergeant Howell and Sam Worthington as Captain Glover. Teresa Palmer plays his wife Dorothy.

For Garfield, he believes Doss is an important character for our times. “Trying to live up to a man who somehow can hold on to his core, about who he is meant to be, and what he is meant to do and what he can’t do, in a culture in an environment that is telling him to be the opposite, that is a rare thing,” said Garfield. “I think we can aspire to that kind of righteous living as our true selves. That’s tricky in the culture we’re in right now.”

Deadline – Hacksaw Ridge, Mel Gibson’s fifth directorial effort, and his first since 2006’s Apocalypto, screened for the press this morning at the Venice Film Festival. Applause greeted the World War II pic inside the Sala Darsena, and early reviews are strong — the word “comeback” has been used more than once. Equal parts faith-based film and horrors-of-war action drama, it tells the story of real-life hero Desmond T Doss, a conscientious objector who saved 75 men in Okinawa without firing or carrying a gun. Andrew Garfield as Doss leads a cast that also includes Sam Worthington, Vince Vaughn, Luke Bracey, Hugo Weaving, Rachel Griffiths and Teresa Palmer.

Scripted by Robert Schenkkan and Andrew Knight, the movie has a sort of throwback quality, yet remains technically very much of today and is laid out in two parts. It kicks off on the battlefield with scenes of flaming, flying bodies, but quickly retreats 16 years earlier to Doss’ childhood with his brother (Roman Guerriero/Nathaniel Buzolic), loving mother (Griffiths) and abusive WWI vet father (Weaving). From the outset, it’s clear religion plays a big part in the boy’s life — particularly following a harrowing incident of roughhousing gone wrong. As a young man, Garfield’s now resolute pacifist develops an interest in medicine, and a crush on a nurse, Dorothy (Palmer). And then, he enlists.

The film takes Doss through Basic Training and introduces the men with whom he will go into battle, including Vaughn, Worthington and Bracey. But he’s bullied and not going anywhere until he convinces the military that he belongs there, despite his refusal to touch a gun. Doss believed that while the war was justified, killing was nevertheless wrong. Ultimately, he was allowed to serve as a medic.

New York Magazine – Teresa Palmer, Australian ex-pat and actress in the trippy Christian Bale drama Knight of Cups, has a knack for healthy living. She launched a wellness site with pal Phoebe Tonkin and hosts a YouTube show that delivers advice on mindfulness, from self-love to healing and letting go. Last month she penned an essay on why she chooses to breast-feed her 2-year-old son despite public disapproval. Speaking to the Cut, Palmer explained how being present with her son takes priority over everything, how being skinny is uninspiring, and why there’s no better love than self-love.

How I start my day: I wake up about 7 a.m. My son breast-feeds — he’s 2. So he will have his morning breast-feed. Then we get up, get ready, and go down to Cafe Gratitude, which is one of my favorite restaurants. I usually have vegan, gluten-free banana bread with vegan whipped cream. And I have a green juice. And my son has a green juice and some chia-seed pudding. And that’s usually our little routine for the mornings. I’m not entirely vegan and gluten-free — I just predominantly eat vegan food. I do eat sushi every now and then.

How I like to sweat: I probably haven’t worked out in the last six or seven months, mainly because I’ve been traveling so much and working so much. When I’m not working, I’m with my son, and I’ve been really trying to be very present with him. Working out is the one thing that I haven’t been able to add back into my daily schedule, given how crazy I’ve been. However, when I do get to the gym, I like to do an array of things. I specifically like interval training: raising the heart rate up really fast and then bringing it back down again for a couple of minutes, and then raising it up again and really spiking it — which burns a lot more calories and just keeps you feeling really fit. I do that by doing jump squats or interval sprints on the treadmill. I do it with kettlebell swings. I usually work out with my husband too. We’ll both go down to Equinox and they’ve got a little childcare center there, so we’ll put our son in, and then we’ll work out. I do a five-minute plank. And I notice that even though I haven’t worked out in six months, I still have muscle memory. If I do go back to the gym on the odd occasion, I can still plank for five minutes, which is really cool. I haven’t lost that yet. I also like yoga. That’s really fun. Yoga and some Pilates, and hiking as well.

The Australian-born, LA-based actress Teresa Palmer first caught renowned photographer Bruce Weber’s attention when he came across her Tez Talk vlog series on her wellbeing website Your Zen Life…

The photographer describes her as being like “Mother Earth”, a role Palmer, 30, feels compelled to fulfil. “It’s empty just being an actor in Hollywood – I have a responsibility to affect positive change,” she says. When Palmer signed up with her local acting agency in Adelaide at 16, she never imagined where it would lead.
“I thought I’d just get a few commercials,” she says. Then, two years later, she was given the starring role in the independent drama 2:37, which premiered at Cannes in 2006 to a 15-minute standing ovation. By the end of 2016 she will have been in no less than nine films in two years – most recently the paranormal horror Lights Out (out in July) and November’s Mel Gibson-directed Hacksaw Ridge. It’s a hectic work schedule, especially considering she has an 18-month-old son, Bodhi, and is expecting her second child, which she recently announced on her newly launched site Your Zen Mama, which “explores what connects us as parents”.
